OmGoodness.. I love them too! Does your mom feed them at all? I think you should just leave them to their own devices, but I'd personally have a hard time not tossing them a nugget every now and then ;). 'course, I'm the one who brought home a LITTER of abandoned baby skunks one time. We presume their mother had been hit by a car (there was a dead skunk in the area). These babies were running around a parking lot in the daytime (totally odd behavior... probably came out looking for food after waiting too long for their momma). I tried to find a rescue for them, and before I knew it I'd been connected with the game warden who told me it was illegal for me to have them and that since we'd handled them, they would have to be euthanised for the testing of rabies. I was SO upset and wanted to release them in the worst way, but feared punishment (the warden wasn't all that nice about it). I got a call 2 weeks later... they were all healthy. Lesson learned... next time I find a litter of baby skunks... move them to a safer location and shut my mouth. I was trying to help them and in the end I cost them their lives. To most people, a skunk is a nussaince (and believe me, they can be... our dog happens to like to tango with them every now and then), but we have them at our camp and they are the sweetest creatures. They come out at night and rummage around our feet at the campfire looking for droppings that the kids might have left behind. In all the years, I've never had one spray. I even fed them by hand once. We feed the chipmunks by hand too. Love all these little critters!
